Fellows Induction (2)

On Tuesday they started the day with some reflection, which I joined to discuss their learnings from the previous day and to encourage the habit of journalling through this programme.

The second day was dedicated to understanding the role of leadership. They had a session based on understanding the difference between a manager and a leader. They discussed leadership qualities and reflected on which ones they should prioritise in their life and the classroom.

Then to understand the role of leadership they did an activity called the “power walk”. The Power Walk is a group exercise that facilitates participants to “walk” in someone else’s shoes and experience what it feels like to be powerless or powerful based on gender, occupation, education level, disability, age, health etc. and in the face of different obstacles or shocks. You can read about it more here.

After some reflection, they were given an activity where they were divided into two groups, given 50 grams of tamarind and Rs 100 for each group and were asked to make a cup of juice. From this simple exercise, Weere observed and pointed out small things that helped them understand important leadership qualities. My favourite is that he waited to see if they returned the change money, and he asked the group that didn’t why. When they said that it was just a little change remaining. He highlighted the fact that politicians take a couple of 100 lakhs and think that amount is a small amount and that it doesn’t matter but it is a big amount to the country. It’s the value of returning what was not used that was important.

We ended the day with a Math exercise called the 100 box challenge, where they tested their Math skill and were taught how they can use this daily task with their students in the future to consistently improve their Math.
