WHAT WE DO

WE DEVELOP YOUNG LEADERS TO TRANSFORM EDUCATION IN SRI LANKA.

CHANGE IS POSSIBLE WHEN
THE DESIRE FOR CHANGE IS
COMBINED WITH ACTION

The TFSL Fellows who come through our fellowship, teach for two years in rural schools that need our help the most and commit to becoming change-makers in their communities. Our Fellowship is an intensive, internationally recognized teacher-leadership program that prepares Fellows to guide their students through a more ‘holistic’ approach which builds in important 21st century skills in balance with academic gains, to create sustainable impact in the children’s lives.

Teach First Sri Lanka’s approach draws on global best practices, but is tailored to address the specific needs of under-resourced schools across Sri Lanka based on research and work done by the TFSL team. We have been on the ground, in the most underprivileged schools, for over two years, with local experts in education, finding out first-hand, what these children need.

We work closely with our Alumni to facilitate new leadership opportunities within and beyond the educational community. Our Fellows possess the capabilities and competencies to become community leaders and ensure that all children, regardless of background, receive a high-quality, holistic, and inclusive education.

THE FELLOWSHIP
PROGRAM

As a TFSL Fellow you can make a difference in the education of Sri Lanka’s children and gain the leadership experience, as well as skills to elevate your opportunities and approach your career in a new light.

THE TFSL FELLOWSHIP IS A UNIQUE, INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED, TEACHER-LEADERSHIP PROGRAM.

Fellows attend six-week residential training, followed by peer-mentoring and regular professional development activities. Fellows will have support from our local and international partners, as well as access to frequent online/offline professional development activities and opportunities to interact/collaborate with peers around the world. Our aim is to develop leadership skills through practical, experiential learning, creating teacher-leaders who go above and beyond.

We ensure that Fellows are supported on a daily/weekly basis by experienced instructional coaches, their peers (cohort members), and TFSL network mentors. They will grow not only as educators and advocates, but become a catalyst for change in the wider school community

We support our alumni to continue their leadership journeys after their fellowship, whether that’s pursuing a path in education, or other opportunities, through Fellowship Alumni Pathways.

By leveraging the talent of our Fellows, we create a multiplier effect that can drive lasting change in the education system. Our sustainability plan centres on mobilizing TFSL Alumni and working with partners to encourage innovation and positive impact.

SDG4: Quality Education

To achieve our objectives, our Fellowship programme is mapped against key targets under United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 — Quality Education. Our Fellowship integrates the Design Thinking Method as an approach to Social Innovation. Fellows are expected to create ideas linked to Sustainable Development Goals and defend them during the fellowship.

TFSL is committed to making our Fellows aware of the SDGs and how they can orient their approach towards solving problems in Sri Lankan education, both during and after the fellowship. Through this approach, our Fellows can continue to create an impact on wider Sustainable Development Goals beyond the fellowship, as an extension of their social innovation projects.

We hope that this project will inspire our best Fellows to actively execute some of their best ideas as alumni and contribute to other SDGs.
